The Skinny:

I mistakenly thought all socket 478 CPU fans would come with the socket 478 base needed to attach to the MB, but was wrong. This product fit perfectly and was easy to install without disconnecting everything (Asus P4-800 MB). Rosewill fan was no problem to clip onto it. If you have a heavy fan you may want to go with this product, the crossbracing adds a lot of strength. Local electronics stores did not have this product.

I bought this to put in my Dell Poweredge 400sc because Dell had put in a proprietary retainer, and I needed a stock cooler for my P4. What I like about this retainer compared to other normal 478 retainers is that it came with a back plate. Having that back plate makes it much more comfortable to put a heavy heatsink on your CPU. My brother's 478 retainer used push pins, while this one screws in. I prefer screws over push pins, even on the newer chip sockets, just because it helps the heatsink set on the CPU better. If you have a system that needs a 478 retainer, then this is the best buy for anyone.
